The Asian Artist Mutual Foundation would like to congratulate the three Asian Artist Fellows who have made the final list for the 2022 Fellowship Program: landscape designer Selyin Ding, fashion designer Frances Lu, and photographer and Chinese visual artist Angela Zhou, who will now be working with the Foundation, even though the entire program was stalled in 2019 due to the new crown pneumonia. They will now embark on a new phase of their artistic careers in collaboration with the Foundation.

2022 AAMF Fellowship Program Finalists

Meet the member of finalists

  • Frances Lu

Frances Lu is a fashion designer currently based in New York City. Having grown up in China and studied fashion in the States, she offers a unique perspective on the diversity of eastern and western aesthetics. Her garments are edgy but not loud, elegant but not conventional. There’s a sense of subtleness in her use of color and texture that draws the audience. She often borrows inspiration from various media she came into contact with, such as literature, films, and photography. With a background in ceramics training, she transforms garments into wearable sculptural pieces.

Living in New York City, she is deeply driven by vigorous energy. She is interested in exploring the inner state of the human mind in her work. She believes that art should be able to express and heal; garments should complete a person on the inside by looking unique on the outside.

  • Selyin Yi Ding

Selyin Yi Ding is a professional landscape architecture designer at PORT Urbanism while working

on art projects exploring the relationship between human and the external world. Her projects are based in research and theories in Environmental Psychology understanding that nature and human- built surroundings has strong and sophisticated influence on how people feel, think, and behave. Temperature, humidity, wind, light, shadow and other natural elements seems trivial when surrounded by massive architecture and development. Her focus is to use various medium to elevate what seems invisible in daily life, and raise the awareness of what have shaped us individually.

  • Angela ZHOU

Angela Zhou is a visual artist & photographer mainly focused on the Chinese ancient style project. However, due to her early contact with Chinese culture film and television works, she was attracted by the rich antique style and the pure Chinese atmosphere.

In recent years, Hanfu has been on the rise, and many young people who are interested in traditional culture and more active in promoting Hanfu have joined Angela's team. Using the Internet as a platform to introduce Hanfu to the US, the group is dedicated to preserving Hanfu and following the thousand-year heritage of the country of the crown. In time, Hanfu is no longer only found in movies and TV but also on street corners overseas, where people wearing Han costumes can be seen from time to time.
